Body language is non-verbal language. People also communicate to others using gestures, postures and other physiologic signs. The non-verbal language is continuously being sent out by humans to communicate specific and definite messages such as aloofness with crossing his or her arms across the chest, hostility with blank or harsh facial expressions, attention with consistent eye contact, disbelief with scratching the chin or averted gaze or touching the ear, boredom with tilted head or unfocused eye contact, interest with extended eye contact, and lying with excessive blinking. The body language is also interpreted with such meanings. However, these are at best an observed pattern that is indicative. The body language when combined with gestures and verbal language can mean something different.

Hands and legs too express and communicate messages. For instance, putting hands on knees for readiness, putting hands on hips for impatience, locking hands behind back for self-control, locking hands behind head for confidence, putting leg over the arm of the chair for indifference, pointing legs and arms in a particular direction to indicate interest in the direction, and crossing arms for submissiveness are few such body languages.

What is the extent of non-verbal communication within all forms of human communication? Opinions on this differ. Some believe it to be a high of 80 percent of all communication while others put it at a conservative estimate of 50 to 65 percent. Body language is considered to be the best when feelings and attitudes are to be communicated. The words, the tone of the words and the body language together are to be taken to understand what is being communicated. Natural human gestures or unintentional and spontaneous gestures also are continuously taking place. These include a finger lock, an eye rub, a nose itch, a chin rest, a lip touch, an ear scratch and a head scratch. Though this does not seem to indicate anything, yet researchers are searching for possible underlying meaning. However, these are as yet speculative. Significant research is undertaken to investigate the body language signs.

There are many benefits from using the knowledge about body language. It makes it possible to better read and understand another person. It could assist in confidence building. Communication skills can be sharply improved. It has potential use in the diagnosis as well as treatment of metal health problems.
